How Norsemen’s Land Got Its Name
The merciless Vikings, who lived from 700 to 1100 A.D. were bitterly and uniformly feared for their wanton, cold, and harsh actions. The Vikings brazenly, viciously, and deliberately slaughtered innocent women and children, who could not flee. Some intrepid Vikings who were especially savage, stern, and scornful, were called “berserkers.” They fatally attacked and brandished weapons, even in churches. They stole food and other riches, so the monks made a prayer which went, “God deliver us from the furry of the Norsemen.” The Vikings were called Norsemen. They built massive, unrivaled warships, which they sent out in fleets of several hundred, instilling anxiety in the hearts of all who observed their approach. The Vikings tenaciously and resolutely gained control of towns all over France and England. In fact, King Charles the Simple did not even fight, he hastily gave some land to them. That land eventually became known as Northmen’s land or Normandy. Because of their ruthless ways, the Vikings are remembered to this day.
